PostSubject: Reports from Champions Online   Thu Sep 17, 2009 3:20 pm

Hey guys, how're you doing?

I've been having a blast at Champions Online, a superhero game.

One of the first things that will strike you is the character customization.

This is my latest character, one that uses her fists and not much else.

This is my highest level character, a vampire of the Toreador clan, for those familiar with White Wolf's Vampire: the Masquerade RPG.

And this one is my tank-mage, a power armour superhero

She is in what is called the Powerhouse, a place where you go to train new powers when you level. Here you can test out powers on training dummies before locking your them in. You'll have to do this as respec costs are through the roof, but more on that later. Here is my power armour hero pumping lead into the training dummies.

I gotta go. I'll give another update later. But before that, here's a picture for Shiro. Freddy Mercury said "Hi".

Males don't look good in hotpants and low cut dresses. Not that I've tried, of course.

To continue from where I left off; I shall start with the quest system. This aspect of the game is the most like WoW. Quest-givers have "!" over their heads and when you're done, they have the "?". Many of the quests send you out into the world that is shared with other players. Quests include defeating X number of Y; collecting X number of Y, escort quests, interacting with items and so on.

One improvement over WoW's system is that when you need to defeat a quest mob, even if someone is already there fighting it, you don't have to wait for him to finish, and then wait for the respawn; or secretly hope that he'll die so that the mob will reset and you can have your go right away. Here, you can just join in the fight even if you didn't start it. As long as you do enough damage to it, you'll get the credit. If you need it to drop a quest item, all parties will get it too.

The quest drops are usually 100% with a few exceptions, and the kill-number requirements are mostly low, with the highest I've seen so far being 30 while the others are usually 10-15. Considering that the game is balanced around each hero taking on 3 henchmen and a villain at once, you'd complete the 30 in less than 10 mins. While there is a shortage of quest content at the mid 30s, prior to that, you should have no need to grind mobs.

One very interesting feature of the game is the Nemesis. He is your arch-enemy, like Lex Luthor to Superman, Dr. Octopus to Spiderman, or the Joker to Batman. There are quests that feature your arch-nemesis and you have to stop his schemes. He would also ambush you sometimes when you're fighting a tough mob.

My vampire toon's nemesis is a hunter in the vein of White Wolf's Hunter: the Reckoning RPG. She's a self-righteous vampire hunter like the demon-hunter monk Fa Hai in Bai She Zhuan.

She's a gun-toting badass.

Here's a pic of the cat-fight between the two:

This is from another character, my engineer, my highest level at the moment. Standing with my twin rattling guns.

A tribute to Team Fortress 2, as they transform from robots to gatling guns.

Nice-looking toon you got there, Zie!

Mix and match will definitely be stronger than sticking to one framework, and it will remain so unless something changes.

To illustrate on this point to those who have not tried the game, the old dichotomy of durable warrior needing to get into melee range to do devastating attacks vs the squishy ranged damage dealer is blown apart in this game. The power-armour framework is a an example. Zie's armoured hero can shoot missiles from his back, spew lead from an armour piercing machine-gun from his left shoulder and energy attacks from his wrists ALL AT THE SAME TIME and still have high hp, defences, and even a shield-wall type power. All these without leaving the Power Armour framework. For even greater survivability, he can take a self-heal power or the power to summon two flying pets that heal you from two other frameworks.

So you can create, in WoW terms, an ice mage that can rain death from range to multiple mobs, hold enemies so they can't move while you beat them up, have a warrior's HP and defences and shield wall power and cast a HoT om yourself.
