Combat is an improvement over the last games in the series, difficulty is a little too easy on the easy difficulty levels (in comparison to last games) but the difficult levels are difficult so that's fine I guess. I've found it fun so far!

I was curious to try it as I never really played the history/simcity/turnbased/tile grid kind of game before. I like History alot though so I went to try the demo
From what I experienced from the 100 rounds limit the game is quite colourful and the tooltips helps alot for new players.
I think the game might be abit too openended for my liking though, would sort of prefer a more campaign/mission/scenario game like RoN kind.
And for some weird reason Singapore is considered important enough to be in this game

I miss RoN/AoE/EE type games, not enough of them on the market anymore RoN is definitely my favourite and most missed

I was happy with conquering Singapore and building only gold generating buildings ... until I discovered Kuala Lumpur. First time I razed a city, and damned if it didn't feel good!

I leave Singapore independent. Last time I attacked them, every nation state decided they'd had enough of me simultaneously and attacked me all at once

Was playing as France when India and her allies, including Singapore, attacked. Funny thing was India's troops consisted mainly of crossbowmen and pikemen in the Industrial Era while Singapore had three infantry armies. All were no match for the foreign legion, though, and the hokkien pengs fell to the last man.

Gandhi is a dickhead, only matched by Bismarck and Montezuma for starting wars which they'll clearly lose.

Gandhi in Civ IV behaved more or less like the man himself, preferring to go the scientific route. Unfortunately, while the devs have given the Civ leaders voiced lines in Civ V, they are completely devoid of personality. It doesn't matter who you meet, Gandhi or Montezuma, they all want to win, by any means necessary. Gandhi is as likely to unleash violence as Montezuma, or Darius.

I dunno, Gandhi got mad at me when I started killing other people
So I set him and his things on fire.

I actually am currently in a Large Map game atm playing as India. I decided to try and go for the Steam achievement for only three cities and a cultural victory.
What this means is 300 turns later, I am hardly a military force to be reckoned with, I can't sustain an army beyond three-four units. To give you an idea, the current superpower is Japan with a military score of 2400. I have 400. Five civilizations have fallen, and around 8 nation states are currently occupied, since game start and yet, mine isn't one of them. Part of this is because I'm located on a separate island in an Ice Age map but part of it is that I've actively been trading resources with the larger powers.
There have been a few times where I've traded gold or resources in return for nothing but most of the time, I've been re-compensated for trading. It's been rather surprising because I thought like you that somebody would eventually have decided to make war on me but any civs that have thus far is because I've allied myself with another and decided to agree to war, hoping to receive free gold for peace.

1st time playing i used US ... well, didnt know much abt the game, i build anything on sight (on tiles) without knowing u actually need citizens to work on them.
restart
2nd time playing i used Japan ... my settlers move fast and had the Great Wall covering 5 cities with my Capitol hiding deep inside mountainous region. The Great Wall looks cool. but well, those ard me like US, Germans, some city-states decided to gang up and whack me *sob sob* .. too bad for them, i survived and took control of the situations. The gang can only watched me grew into an advance Era than them and they cnt do a thing. GAME CRASHED !! wtf! ... realised i may need a 4gb ram to play a Huge map >< TNND!
restart
3rd time playing... so happy with Japan, i used it again. This time i knew alot better of the game than b4. (thx to Gallow) I was ahead of everyone in Tech research and with plenty of wonders built. well... GAME CRASHED AGAIN !.. think i cnt play a LARGE map either >< WTF!!
restart
4th time playing... JAPAN AGAIN !! .. this time is a standard map. great! everything is smooth so far with my destroyers control the sea. now, cnt wait to see the sight of my bombers flying to drop *shit* on those ard me! YES FINALLY !!! oh ya, i yet to take SINGAPORE !! and NUKE KL !!! That will be a great scene.

Ming,
I've found that when your game crashes, you can still recover by loading up your 'autosaves'.
Try to go to the load game screen and click on "autosaves".

Not sure about the demo version, but the autosave is done every 10 turns by default. You can change it though. I changed mine to every 5 turns. It crashes a lot.
There was a game where a whole continent was devoid of Civs and home to 4 little city states. I was the first Civ that got there, having just researched Astronomy to sail on a caravel. Every city state rewarded me 30 gold pieces for discovering their little hidey-hole. I knew something wasn't right when my caravel started seeing ancient ruins and rustic barbarian camps (whose occupants would terrorise the city states with state of the art destroyers in a few more decades) this late in the game.
So I decided to found a city on that continent. I sent an advance party of knights to keep the natives honest and chanced upon one of said ancient ruins. It conjured up images of the Templar knights entering the ancient city of Jerusalem. So my knights went in and they discovered advanced weapons there (never quite figured how advanced weapons end up in ancient ruins).
So they rode in as knights, and emerged as cavalry! There were rifles in those ancient ruins!

It is a clip of the former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad talking about the newly-acquired F18 airplanes. Note the off-the-cuff comment on Singapore in the early seconds of the clip.
The poster has a transcript of the speech there if you can't make out what he said.

Rhodie,
its not abt getting back my savegames ... i save almost every turn when i started to explore n uncover the map.
when i click to end my turn ... seems like the loading of what other players are doing crashed the game. i was playing with 22 AI and 28 city-states.
maybe i shld try huge maps but with lesser AI and city-states. hehehehe
NUKE KL !!!!

My best one ever was sending a scout into the ruins in 3000 B.C and coming out as Musketmen. I just sent them against every Civ I could with a support of archers and razed the world so heavily it would have made Genghis Khan proud.

It's fun if you tech up much faster than the rival civs because the city states will match your tech level. This results in hilarity for aggressive rival civs that try to invade city states. In one game, I enjoyed watching the Babylonians waste all their swordsmen and crossbowmen against riflemen and later infantry. That one city state kept them busy for the entire game because they were in a permanent state of war.

That hasn't been my experience though. Not sure how fast the city states tech up, but playing France, I made a beeline up the tech tree to Foreign Legion in order to steamroll the continent, putting other tech branches on hold. All the city states were still using pikemen and crossbowmen. The AI probably teched up in a more uniform fashion.

@Ming - there's some bug at the moment that causes your save game files to balloon if you manually save the game. I've seen saved games grow as big as 8mb and some people report late game saves of 30mb. Once u get this problem, even auto saves are as big. This causes loading saved games to take ages (1-2mins) and often causes the game to freeze.
The only solution is to delete all the saved games and start fresh using only autosaves. You can set autosave to every turn if u like. this keeps the saves small (<1mb)
I've tried the war route but it's quite frustrating as even razing a city takes a few turns and the unhappiness builds up really quickly once you have more than a couple occupied cities.
