Any interest for Final Fantasy XIV?

FFXI was my first mmorpg (Gallowyn got me interested in it) and I've always had a soft spot for it, even though it was extremely team-centric.

This version is soloable, and I've always liked the visuals and music of the FF series.

NONE WHATSOEVER.

More interested in Guild Wars 2!

FF is still more hardcore than I'm willing to have a go at, kind of like Aion after level 30, it just saps interest.

Hardcore in what sense? Grindy?

This game has no pvp, which is the kind of game I like, so that no dev resources are wasted on an aspect of gameplay that I don't engage in. All development would be directed at pve.

GW 2 looks good, but it just seems too good to be true. Too ambitious, in other words.

The 18 hour weekly limit on XP gain, on a game you have to pay for monthly, feels just as irritating as needing a massive amount of XP to gain a single level. It's padding out the game's content longer than it needs to be.

The FF trademark has slowly lost appeal to me after finishing 8, and if their latest single-player endeavour is indicative of the way the series is going, FFXIV will be even worse.

I myself need PVP because it gives me something to alternate with. You will inevitably get bored of PVE and it helps to have something to remove the tedium with. And then you can get bored with PVP and go back to PVE!

You're right that Guild Wars 2 seems to be over-shooting with their ambitions, but I prefer that then sticking with the mould and hardly deviating, which is sadly what seems to be happening with SW: TOR. Apart from adding voices to everything and making choices, the combat hardly seems very interesting and the railway-shooter spaceship segments are a piss take.

You're referring to the Fatigue System in FFXIV. But I don't think you've understood what it really means. Try this video, it should make it clearer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abE09-tqhoM

My main worry with FFXIV is the system requirements. While my comp meets all the minimum requirements, it meets none of the recommended ones, and since they tend to understate the former, the game will run horribly for me. I'll need to play a demo before buying it, if they offer one.

What I've always liked about FFXI, is that it has alot of other stuff to do other than gaining xp, or collecting gear. I used to make the long journey to this oasis in a desert to fish for moat carps. The whole fishing experience was a minigame in itself, with the type of fishing rod to use, the bait, the location, the time of day etc. There was a fishing quest that required players to turn in somewhere around a hundred thousand moat carps. The high level toons with cash to burn would "out-source" the task to low level ones like my warrior/monk. Selling moat carps got me enough to buy all the equipment I needed. I have fond memories.

Taken from the video about Text:

Quote :
Here's how the limit works... the fatigue limit is divided into thresholds. a single threshold is equal to the amount of experience points a regular player will gain in an hour, while continuously fighting battles. You will get experience points at a normal rate, until you break the 8th threshold. After that the experience points you gain will gradually decrease, until you reach the 15th threshold where you can no longer gain experience points.

Then it goes on to mention how it only limits it for one 'discipline', meaning if you're only interested in that one discipline you're SOL and you'll have to either stay out of combat or wait for the week reset. The example mentioned is that you'd level them for more skills on your main discipline but how is that any different than just saying "Ok, level your priest, but you'll have to stop levelling for this week when you hit 15. If you want more skills for your priest, level a shaman to 15".

It's an artificial cap and is just as bad as saying you need a billion million XP to hit the next level.

I admit it looks pretty but Aion jaded me to how games look. I'd rather wait and see how it actually plays out to reviews rather than rely on promotional videos to tell me, especially those made by fansites.

Not quite. To keep to your example of the Priest, actually, Conjuror - your staff will wear out in the course of your battles, say, 15 hours' worth of it. What WoW considers as crafting and gathering professions are treated as Disciplines in FFXIV, on par with those of the killing kind, like Archer or Gladiator. So, after 15 hours, you gain no more advancement with your Conjuror, so you have a choice to level up Botany and Carpentry, for example. I'd imagine you'll need these two to repair your staff, or make new ones, as otherwise, you'll need other players to repair it for you. And from a broader point of view, the ready availability of carpenters, blacksmiths, or armorers to repair your stuff will be due to this Fatigue system, as the hardcore players find themselves spending time leveling other Disciplines, and not just the battling kind. Leveling up a different Discipline would require different powers, different execution, different places to go for leveling, different quests, etc, so there is variation in a player's game experience.

This is really quite different from a system that simply has a high number of xp required per level. Such a system just means you do nothing but press the same buttons over and over for hours, sometimes hunting in the same place. Surely you can see the difference in gameplay experience? Unless you're saying this game is trying to add more timesinks to get you to stay subscribed longer, as opposed to one that makes it easy to get to max level in a matter of 3 weeks and gets you to stay subscribed longer with post-max level grinds?

Besides, 15 hours a week works out to a little more than 2 hours per day. I'd say if I were to play more than that per day, I myself would want to take a break from leveling up a battle Discipline too, and tinkle with the crafting Disciplines.

Whether it will be fun will come down to it's execution, but this idea is definitely not like a straight "high xp to level" system.

Too bad you didn't get to try the FFXIV open Beta Arielyn. The graphics do look amazing in the trailers. But it’s not a game that immediately appeals to me. One thing puts me off – cute monsters.

I am quite impressed so far by GW2 and am quietly hoping it turns out awesome.

One man’s meat is another man’s poison… Maybe Sym doesn’t like Arie’s meat? Razz

Yeah, there has been a lot of criticism of the UI and the sluggish software mouse. I think these are problems that can be ironed out later, so it's not a big deal for me as I have no issue with their core features.

The early release has started, so looking forward to more details from the early birds.

They're usually pretty light on their reviews, this is surprisingly cutting.

Ahahahahaha! I suspect that watching this review this is as much entertainment as you can get out of FFXIV.
