PostSubject: WAR beta review   WAR beta review EmptyMon Aug 25, 2008 2:21 pm

On the whole, many of those design decisions have 'flown true'. Classes feel unique and powerful. RvR is fun and incredibly easy to jump into. Public Quests immerse adventurers in the story of a place. The capital cities definitely capture the feel of living places. And yet, Warhammer is a place of conflict. Conflict not only between the races, but between what the developers sought and what they have achieved. All the time invested, all the resources expended, have still resulted in a game that will need some post-launch polishing.

In these final days of Beta, the game's "feel" needs the most polish. In many ways Warhammer just feels "slow", for lack of a better word. Character movements can feel somewhat lethargic, and some abilities take what feels like an achingly long time to fire. The goal, I imagine, is to provide a level of strategy in RvR. If you see an opponent firing off a power you have time to counteract. The result in PvE, unfortunately, is that many powers (especially for spellcasters) feel as though you're bringing a cannon online. At low levels the damage output doesn't match up with the 'load time', leaving you feeling disconnected from your character.

Avatar aspects slowing changing as a character leveled? Gone. No Orcs getting bigger each level, which was too bad since that was a very cool idea. Black Guard/Knight of the Blazing Sun? Gone, they were mirror classes and I really loved their individual flavors. (Please bring them back, Mythic!) Choppa/Hammerer? Gone, too. I uh, really just want the Choppa back. Sorry, Stunties. Now, as far as the four cities go, I can actually understand the choice to hold off on them after playing a bunch of the current cities' content. The cities are incredibly full of delicious content meat. If a city in any other MMO is a song or two, then a city in WAR is a small album complete with an overarching story throughout.

Sorry, I am not good at writing "review/preview". I just play, enjoy the game and forget most of everything that came and went. Razz

Well, I have been playing WAR Closed Beta on and off ever since I got invited in Collectors' Edition Closed Beta about 2 weeks ago and about a "couple" of hours during Preview Weekend.

Basically I have played most the classes up to Rank (level) 10-15 and Renown (PVP level) 3-4 and I do agree with Massively. The characters glitches sometimes and not animate properly. IMHO Mythic should work on the pathing issues. Certain mobs gets stuck in trees and/or other objects, some stay static when you attack them from range. Well, I guess these are minor issues which Mythic will get it fixed hopefully before launch.

The lower level Scenarios (BGs) which I did in Tier 1 was great. No more turtles!! It ends on a 15 to 20 minutes time limit. What really surprises me is WAR is pretty balanced regardless of what class you play. Combat is a bit "slowish" but you will get used it though. We are so spoilt by WoW!! The Public Quest in itself is really enjoyable and immersive. It gives you a sense of belonging and be part of the community. With all the players doing PQ, the need for groups is not necessary (unless you want a guild run and/or pre-made for better loot chance). All in, it was and will be a great experience.

The article on GameSpy pretty much sums up what I like about WAR!!

I am torn between 2 classes that I would love to play at launch. Shadow Warrior and Disciple of Khaine. Oh well, guess I'll roll both. In fact, I will probably roll Order on one server and Destruction on another. Twisted Evil

Anyways, I am sorry Luvme for being late in replying. Been busy hooking up a new PC.

/brag on

Over the weekend, I spent about S$6000 on a new computer. Asus Striker II Extreme, Intel QX9770 (3.20 Ghz), 2 pairs of Corsair DDR3 TWIN3X4096-1600C7DHXIN (8Gb total), XFX GeForce 280 GTX XT (GX-280N-ZDE9) running in SLI.

oh ya i bought the asus striker extreme 1 last time. was a total disappointment becos the board spoilt many times and they replaced/recon/repair it again and again but still same old problem.

gave up on the warranty cos time spent to go to asus svc centre was just not worth it. so bought a new board. hope they improved on the new board.

I've been following WAR's beta reviews on various forums, and on the whole they are mixed. I'm probably going to adopt a wait-and-see approach first, unless perhaps I get a preview on a beautiful S$6000 machine. pig

haha...I expected this going to happen which is why I have a "/brag on and /brag off". You can look at it, drool and not comment. But I did in fact say what I have to say about WAR.

Hmm..I am seriously wondering what is so "epeen" about it. Does posting a pic of my PC really bothers you? Did I hurt your male ego? I mean I am sure alot of people post pics of what they have and that does not mean "my epeen is bigger than yours". I guess I should not post pics of my apartment then. Come to think of it, it's likely because you can not get over the fact that someone is actually doing better than you.

Anyways, Gallowyn started the "lets compare epeen" comment not me. Evil or Very Mad

Justin asked "One thing that's important to me in an MMO is a feeling of progression visible on the character. Does Warhammer look and feel more progressed as you level? Can you tell the difference between a level 5 and level 45 by how they look?"

Very much so! Starting armor is fairly utilitarian, but as you gain in power there's a very clear change from the basics to more elaborate gear. You'll even be able to tell the difference between a level 1 and a level 10 character by their gear – the level 10 will look like sort of a 'variation on the theme' begun with the level 1 armor. By the time you're talking about the difference between a level 5 and a level 40 character, there's going to be a world of difference in your gear. Want something more concrete? Here's a level 1 character vs. a level 31 character:

I like the 'grubby' look of the toons.

thanks neonate for posting pics of your pc, i <3 it. pls post some close-up and views from other angles. what casing is that? do your apartment pics too. would <3 to see it too. bounce

as to WAR, i think i skip until they fix some of the faults the reviewers said so far. imho, they rushed it.

anyway, during non-raid days, if i am free, i have been playing rainbow 6 LV2 and company of heroes. i still got some backlog i wanna play (nwn 2 gold) and crysis, so i guess i got little time for WAR unless they fixed it, then it goes to the top of my must play priority list.

yup, i read about this sometime back. imo, i dont find this very impressive. the difference in the actual look of the models (not the gears) interest me for a few secs but thats about it. maybe i took it for granted that it should be so.

PostSubject: Re: WAR beta review   WAR beta review EmptyTue Aug 26, 2008 3:54 pm

To adequately summarize the Weekend Preview, we would have to say that the gameplay was exceptional. The PvP mechanics for Scenarios, RvR, and sieging functioned excellently, especially for a beta test.

There was an obvious air of polish and attention to detail that games like AoC never managed to figure out. That's not to say it was perfect. It is clearly still a beta client, as there is not way to significantly modify your video settings, Living Guilds aren't complete, and there is quite a bit of server-side lag during combat.

This is especially important for classes that are forced to chain abilities (Swordmaster, Black Orc, Witch Elf and Witch Hunter), as the server incorrectly calculates the global cooldown and your abilities refuse to fire within a reasonable amount of time. Word is that combat and ability time is much improved in this client, but it still has a ways to go in PvP before it's truly ready.

The majority of classes on both sides are nearly balanced and at the end of the day... everyone was enjoying the game. Through many beta experiences, rarely have I seen such an atmosphere of satisfaction from within a guild concerning the overall appearance and functioning of a game.

Thought I read somewhere that they've removed the transformation of your toon as you level up (e.g. Black Orc increasing in size). Pity, sounds cool. Any update on that?

I've been reading lots of reviews and it seems like the biggest issue (to me) would be the sluggishness of combat. I think we've all grown accustomed to the level of responsiveness of WoW and personally I might have difficulty adjusting.

The PvE content is also apparently lacking, but hey, it's WAR. bounce

More epeen pics according to some but here's two.

A glass mirror cabinet for WWII 1/35. 1/32 modern planes, Star Wars plastic models and some Lego. I have never really enjoy doing anything more than spray/hand painting those but WoW suck me right in. I still do some in my free time though. Like the unfinished black F-16 in the left corner. I might actually finish it while waiting for WAR. Either that or finish up my last 2 level in CoV Razz

Anyways, the other shows the PC casin. It's an Antec P182 SE.

Surprisingly mine runs quite quiet. Can not hear much with music running in the background anyways. Maybe thats why I failed in raids with BoOBs because I can not hear anything coming off Vent/Voice chat. Still no pics of me. The suspense is terrible. I hope it will last - Warhammer Alliance

Anyways, back on-topic. Here's a good read from MMORPG.
